Skilled trades training in Manitoba gets a boost

May 14, 2015 | By HPAC Magazine

A new Skilled Trades and Technology Centre (STTC) at Red River College (RRC) in Winnipeg, MB, will house additional laboratory and shop space and classrooms for up to 1000 students per year in high demand trades and technologies, including HVAC and sheet metal. Funded by Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation (MIT) and operated by RRC, the Skilled Trades and Technology Centre is a $60M investment that will boost skilled trades training at RRC’s Notre Dame Campus by 30 per cent.

Totalling approximately 100,000 square feet, the STTC will also support technology and innovation in other related industrial sectors such as robotics and automation, hydraulics and pneumatics, materials, electronics, computer aided design and the Innovation Lab for applied research initiatives, industry and student projects. The STTC will also work in conjunction with the Centre for Applied Research in Sustainable Infrastructure  (CARSI).

“Manitoba is building like never before and jobs in the skilled trades will be in greater demand as our economy expands,” said Premier Greg Selinger. “We want to provide students with the training they need to begin a great career and build their futures right here at home.”

Premier Selinger went on to say that the centre will be an important hub for the province’s skills training strategy and will be a key factor in increasing Manitoba’s workforce by 75,000 highly-trained people by 2020.
