Door-to-door Bill potentially damaging to reputable contractors

In June this year, the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute (HRAI) met with MPP Yvan Baker on the proposed Bill 193, Door-to-Door Sales Prohibition Act, 2016. HRAI’s role in this discussion included voicing concerns about specific wording used in the bill that states banning all “direct contracts” (i.e. agreements signed in homes), whether or not they were initiated at the door, including even those that are based on a customer calling in a contractor.
W5, CTV News’ current affairs and documentary program, is also following the door-to-door sales issue closely. Producers approached HRAI to ask for the association’s take on this obstacle, and what it means to the HVAC industry across Canada. W5 host Kevin Newman interviewed Warren Heeley, president of HRAI, recently at HRAI’s head office in Mississauga, ON. The program will be exploring the inappropriate tactics used, and misleading HVAC contracts drawn up by unethical companies selling heating, air conditioning and water heaters across Canada to unsuspecting consumers. It will air on the show’s season premier on October 1, 2016 at 7 p.m.
