March 28, 2016 | By Doug Picklyk

ASHRAE has awarded grants to 24 colleges and universities to help promote the study and teaching of HVAC/R, with the goal of encouraging undergraduate senior students to pursue careers in a related field. Three Canadian schools are among the grant recipients. They are: Ryerson University inToronto, ON, University of Windsor, in Windsor, ON and Carleton University in Ottawa, ON.

Ryerson’s proposal includes the design and prototyping of a heat transfer enhanced hybrid, air-based building integrated solar photovoltaic/thermal collector for net-zero energy building applications. The University of Windsor’s grant will go toward its proposal for a membrane absorption heat pump. Carleton University earned a grant with its proposal for the evaluation of office-level energy consumption using a sparse sensor network.

The ASHRAE undergraduate senior project grant will begin accepting applications for the 2016-17 program in August 2016, with the final deadline in December 2016.ashrae_logo copy
