Support Ontario Youth (SOY), a not-for-profit organization that supports employers and apprentices in the skilled trades along the apprenticeship journey, has introduced its new Skilled Trades Workforce Development Program and is encouraging employers to get involved.
The Program consists of two elements designed to encourage greater uptake and apprenticeship success in Ontario.
The ‘Tools in the Trades Boot Camp’ is a series of one-day free events offering hands-on tool experiences for individuals aged 18+ and recent high school graduates interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades. Providing exposure to multiple trades including days dedicating to HVAC and plumbing, the Boot Camps also expose individuals to pathways to apprenticeship, free training programs, a complimentary starter tool kit, and create a connection with a range of employers actively looking to hire.
The ‘Trades Readiness Training’ is another element designed for both individuals embarking on their apprenticeship journey and those already pursuing a career in the trades. This program is open to individuals 18+ and recent high school graduates interested in pursuing a career in the skilled trades and current skilled sector workers looking to upskill and advance.
Based on an individuals’ needs, available services include employability and networking skills, trades readiness preparation, mentorship, health and safety training, product knowledge, and insights into the realities of entering the apprenticeship pathway.
Additionally, it provides opportunities for current sector workers to upskill and advance their careers. Through mentorship and specialized training, individuals gain the guidance and skills needed to excel in their chosen trade.
SOY is actively inviting employers to participate in its Skilled Trades Workforce Development Program in order to recruit skilled trades candidates.
This Employment Ontario Program is funded by the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario.
