Report illustrates awareness gap between young people and professionals on advanced technology's use in the trades, along with AI's potential paths to success.

Simpro has released its 2025 Trades Outlook report, which gathers insights from over 600 HVAC, plumbing and electrical business owners worldwide to look at how emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence has changes the opportunities and challenges in the sector.

One area of focus by the report is labour, with data showing that highlighting technology’s role in everyday operations of mechanical contracting trades could be a potential route to bridging the gap into the next generation of the workforce.

This comes from data showing that only 23% of young people believe the trades to utilize cutting-edge technology; a notable discrepancy with the response from 89% of actual trades professionals who report working with advanced technology on a daily basis.

Another key finding of the report showed that AI is already heavily impacting organizational performance within the industry, with 69% of owners seeing AI’s most significant impact to be in optimizing workflows through reduced technician downtime, improved routing efficiency, and increased job completion rates.

The report demonstrates a considerable deal of this value to lie in the predictive maintenance capability of AI technology, with 30% of respondents sharing that predictive maintenance capabilities have helped to prevent costly equipment failures and emergency service calls.

“As someone who’s witnessed the success of trade business owners, I can tell you this is a pivotal moment,” said Gary Specter, CEO of Simpro. “The most successful businesses are facing these challenges head-on: rising customer expectations, evolving workforce dynamics, and the need to embrace technology as a competitive advantage. Those building resilient operations will see substantial growth in the coming years.”
