World Refrigeration Day to Celebrate Cooling Champions

June 21, 2021 | By Logan Caswell

More than 15-million people are currently employed worldwide in the refrigeration sector.

In a world dependent on temperature-controlled environments, World Refrigeration Day (WRD) celebrates the people and technologies responsible for creating and maintaining the world we live in. Celebrated annually on June 26, the international awareness day has support from industry, professional groups, scientific and engineering associations, as well as governments and individuals. The goal is to raise awareness and focus attention on the significant role the industry plays in modern life and society.

The WRD 2021 campaign is titled, “Cooling Champions: Cool Careers for a Better World,” and focuses on careers in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump industry. More than 15-million people are currently employed worldwide in the refrigeration sector which designs, builds, services and regulates more than 5 billion of these systems in operation across the globe. The refrigeration process is vital for maintaining comfortable working and living conditions, as well as for the food and pharmaceutical production.

The goal of the worldwide campaign is to inspire students and young professionals of all genders and encourage them to meet the challenges faced in their own communities.

A new generation of cooling champions – engineers, technicians, researchers, educators, policy experts and executives – is needed to create controlled environments modern life requires. The priority is to reach into a wide diversity of communities to uncover promising talent.

Leading up to the big day the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) along with The International Institute for Refrigeration (IIR) will co-present two webinars to mark the observation of World Refrigeration Day 2021.

The webinars will describe trends and opportunities in the technologies that deliver comfort, support the cold chain that provides food and life-saving vaccines, and stabilize climate.
