HRAI and ESCO Institute to Develop New Refrigerant Safety Program

January 21, 2022 | By Logan Caswell

The new program is anticipated to launch in June 2022.

HRAI and the ESCO Institute have jointly developed a Low GWP (global warming potential) Refrigerant Safety Program for the Canadian market. As many low GWP refrigerants are mildly flammable (A2L), additional safety precautions and protocols are expected to be followed during the learning experience.

The new program will be made available online and include an assessment component to give HVAC/R professionals a chance to learn how to safely handle, store, transport, and service new systems.

Consulted industry stakeholders unanimously agreed that the training should be mandatory for tenured technicians and uniform across all provinces. HRAI has begun discussions with some provincial regulators to make this a reality.

HRAI and ESCO Institute are jointly committed, through this collaborative effort, to ensure that the industry is properly trained on the handling, safety procedures, as well as the applicable standards and codes related to handling these new refrigerants.

HRAI anticipates the program to launch in June 2022.
