Quebec spending $10M on Montreal decarbonization project

Énergir chaleur et climatisation urbaines, a district energy network in downtown Montreal, will install two electric boilers and a heat recovery system.
The government of Quebec has announced the allocation of $9,996,606 to Énergir urban heating and air conditioning [Énergir chaleur et climatisation urbaines (ECCU)], a district energy network in downtown Montreal, for the installation two electric boilers and a heat recovery and valorization system which will reduce the network’s GHG emissions by nearly 10,000 tonnes.
The announcement was made as part of the 2024 Montreal Climate Summit.
ECCU operates Montreal’s thermal power plant and supplies heating and air conditioning to more than a third of the city centre.
In total, nearly 2 million square meters of building space (office towers, shopping centres, hotels, railway stations, campuses and prestigious apartments) are supplied by the network.
The installation of two electric boilers producing hot water and steam from hydroelectricity will allow the company to optimize its energy consumption. The facility will maintain its natural gas operations, allowing ECCU to offset the demand for hydroelectricity during peak periods.
It is estimated the project will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 9,996.6 tonnes per year.
“I am delighted with the initiative of the government and Énergir, which are concretely committed to the decarbonization of the energy supply of downtown Montreal” said Valérie Plante, mayor of Montreal. “This represents a major milestone in achieving our goal of carbon neutrality by 2030.”
