Show your support for the Prompt Payment Act

January 8, 2014 | By HPAC Magazine

Richard McKeagan, president of the Mechanical Contractors Association of Canada (MCAC), has issued a request to the mechanical industry. Bill 69, The Prompt Payment Act 2013 in Ontario has passed second reading in the Ontario legislature and the next process is for it to go to the Standing Committee on Regulations on Private Bills where it will undergo a public consultation process. The Committee stage is an important final step before the Bill can be called to the third and final reading, notes McKeagan. The Ontario caucus of the National Trade Contractors Coalition of Canada (of which MCA Canada is a founding member) together with other industry organizations in Ontario have developed a petition, the results which will be forwarded on to the Ontario legislature. If you are a contractor in Ontario, McKeagan is asking you to take a minute to complete the petition and submit it by clicking the green “sign” button. He went on to say that if you are a contractor outside of Ontario, you can still complete the petition and submit it. This will illustrate that the support is Canada wide. According to McKeagan, when it receives Royal Assent this legislation will not only act as a catalyst for other provincial/territorial jurisdictions to act, but will also have a positive impact throughout the construction chain affecting contractors, subcontractors, sub-subcontractors, suppliers, and employees.
