Two Canadian Teams win awards at the 2024 DOE Solar Decathlon

International competition challenges university teams to design high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewables.
The winning projects for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Decathlon 2024 Design Challenge were announced on Sunday, April 21, and this year two Canadian teams made the podium.
The Solar Decathlon challenges university students to design high-performance, low-carbon buildings powered by renewable energy and compete in one of four divisions: single-family housing; attached housing; multi-family building; and education building.
Since 2002, more than 40,000 students worldwide have participated in the Solar Decathlon’s 10 contests.
This year saw more than 250 students from 40 finalist teams , including four Canadian teams, participate in the 2024 Design Challenge in Golden, Colorado, April 19–21.
The overall winner this year was the University of Arizona, taking home the Grand Winner trophy for their partnership with the Hopi Tribe on 24 eco-friendly rowhouses that integrate passive design techniques and a microgrid to promote energy sovereignty.
A team comprised of the University of British Columbia, Okanagan—Kelowna and Thompson Rivers University, Kamloops, claimed second place in the single-family housing division, and a team from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver won third place in the attached housing division.
