Ontario ministry warns builders against phishing e-mails

September 14, 2018 | By Jillian Morgan

The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing issued a cautionary note on incidents of phishing for BCIN holders.

A number of individuals within the building industry have received phishing e-mails that use Ministry personnel as the contact but are not from the Ontario.ca domain.

These emails have primarily been related to invoicing or payment requests.

The Ministry has reminded holders that it communicates Building Code registration requirements using the e-mail noreply@ontario.ca.

It also does not issue invoices. Acceptable payments include: debit/credit cards or certified cheques as outlined on the Ministry website/application form. Cash, e-transfers, bitcoin, personal/business cheques and other payment methods are not accepted.

For BCIN holders concerned about the authenticity of an e-mail, the Ministry recommends contacting its staff to verify validity prior to opening. www.ontario.ca
