Biocomposite commercial ventilation units made using recycled plastic

Annexair, based in Drummondville, Que., recently unveiled what it calls the first-ever biocomposite ventilation unit for the commercial HVAC market, built using a fire-resistant resin from recycled plastic water bottles, to help promote more sustainable air conditioning.

The central air unit is available in different sizes (examples pictured) for commercial buildings. As the casing requires non-metal components, it is fully corrosion- and rust-resistant, weighs 50% to 60% less than conventional units and should last upward of 60 years if well-maintained.

The new units are scheduled for availability in August 2020 and the company—which is a member of the United Nations (UN) Global Compact—plans to halt production of its conventional steel HVAC units in 2021.
